How Many Teams Qualify for Euro 2020 Through Qualifying Groups, and Will There be a Play-Off?
The EURO 2020 championship qualifying draw happened on the second of December, 2018. The 55 UEFA nations were to fight for the free spots since hosts weren’t given the privilege of automatic qualification. Probably, the large number of hosts (12 in total) makes it difficult to offer the automatic qualification. How many teams should then qualify? Are play-offs still there or is the system different? Read on to find out.
Just like the EURO 2016, the 2020 version of the exciting competition allows 24 nations to book their place through both the group stages and play-offs. As usual, there are ten groups, each producing two top performers for the finals. That means 20 teams will advance to next summer’s championship through the group stage qualifier matches.
However, the decision to allocate the remaining four slots will not happen at the qualifying phase like in the past. Instead, it’s the nations who win in the fresh playoff system that will grab the few spots. The system is connected to the UEFA Nations League ratings.
According to the new rules, 16 winners from the leagues of the UEFA Nations League have guaranteed spots in the play-offs. Nevertheless, if any given group winner books their tournament’s place from the group stages, they won’t require a play-off spot. Instead, their slot will pass onto the next best-rated nation from their specific leagues. For instance, as league winner, England is guaranteed a playoff spot should they be unsuccessful at the group stage. However, if they qualify during this phase, their spot will pass onto Belgium if they need it. If Belgium automatically qualified from their group, the spot will again pass onto another well-rated team.
